Indescribable Gift

What was the greatest gift you ever received? Is there a gift that would just take your breath away on Christmas morning as you wake up to see it with a big red bow on top? A gift that would be just too wonderful for words? A new car? A sewing machine? A computer? Or how about this: What was the greatest gift you have ever given? Were you beside yourself with the anticipation of what the recipient of your gift would do upon opening it?

If you’re looking for a gift too wonderful for words, there’s good news! You already have it! A gift too wonderful for words is already yours and it didn’t cost you a THING! This gift is so magnificent that it is BEYOND telling in human words.

In 2 Corinthians 8-9 Paul tells us about giving. These two chapters go into detail about stewardship and giving. At the end in 2 Corinthians 9:15 Paul says, “Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift.” The gift Paul talks about is our Lord Jesus Christ. This gift is called indescribable by Paul and it’s been said that the word he uses here, anekdiegetos, had never been found in any Greek texts before. He evidently “made up” the word to describe the indescribable.

Just bask in that for a moment. The Bible tells us in John 21:25, “if all the other things Jesus did were written down, the whole world could not contain the books.” If that can be said about what Jesus DID, then think of what could be said about what Jesus IS. He’s indescribable.

What was the motivation behind the giver of such a gift? Love. “For God so loved that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) That’s some gift! Only God could come up with a gift that out-gives the universe!

And what are we to do with this gift? Re-gift it! “Now wherever we go he uses us to tell others about the Lord and to spread the Good News like a sweet perfume.” (2 Corinthians 2:14) Only God could come up with a gift that is supposed to be re-gifted.

Lord, I cannot fathom the greatness of the gift of Your Son. I am so grateful for Your gift and for Your love toward me. Use me, Lord, to spread this good news during this season of giving and throughout the entire year.
